Reiki as a Self-Care Tool

I’ll be honest Reiki is not a word I had heard during my life until I met and became friends with Amreeta a few months after moving to Dubai. I didn’t have a clue how to pronounce it and certainly didn’t know what it involved.

For those of you that are wondering what on earth I am talking about, I’ll let Amreeta explain.

“When I tell people about Reiki, a lot of them say ‘Oh yes! It’s some kind of massage, isn’t it?’ Well, no. Reiki is a hands-on spiritual healing technique with its roots in Japanese origin. The word comes from the Japanese Rei, meaning ‘universal life’, and Ki, meaning ‘energy’. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work, drawing in positive energy from the universe. Everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen themselves and to help others. When a person’s energy becomes weak or blocked, this leads to symptoms of physical and/or emotional imbalance. A session with a Reiki practitioner can help alleviate stress and tension as well as assist the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels: physical, mental and emotional. A session is usually pleasant and relaxing (most of my clients fall asleep within minutes) and is often utilised for one’s personal wellness.”

When Mum died last year, I really wanted to read out one of her poems at the funeral. Unfortunately, I suffer from a crippling fear of public speaking, mainly due to having grown-up with a lisp, which, although helped somewhat by having speech therapy when I was 10 years old, still put a huge dent in my confidence, which stayed with me into adulthood.

Amreeta suggested I try a Reiki session to work on my throat chakra, as she felt this might be blocked. I ended up doing three sessions with her, but sadly I can’t remember too much about them as at the time I was going through the pain of losing Mum. What I can tell you is that it worked! I was able to stand up in front of a room full of people and read the poem. I was so proud to have been able to speak my Mum’s beautiful words.

One year on and I’m writing this blog after having experienced another Reiki session. This time though, it was unplanned! I decided to book a session with Jane at Miracles, after popping in for an initial free consultation and sensing an immediate connection with her.

I arrived at Miracles for my session and whilst waiting, browsed their range of incense sticks and was shown their new range of bath salts (which smelt divine). Jane took me into the Reiki room, and we sat and had a chat for a few minutes. The room was subtly dark with relaxing music playing in the background. I then laid down on a bed (similar to a massage table) and she placed crystals on my seven chakra points (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, Crown) and swung a pendulum above each point to see which ones needed unblocking.

The blockage was yet again in my throat chakra!

She then started to perform Reiki on me, paying special attention to the throat area. I could feel the energy pulsating in my throat. She was quite literally clearing my throat!

After the session we had another chat and Jane shared her intuitive thoughts on my energy. I then drank a lot of water and went home.

I didn’t do anything strenuous afterwards, because I felt both physically and mentally exhausted. The work appeared to continue well after the session, as I could feel my throat expanding and I was quite light-headed.

A few hours later, my body started to settle down and that’s when I started to ponder on what it all meant and what action (if any) I should be taking now that I was unblocked. I didn’t act on these thoughts immediately and instead waited until morning to dissect it over an Iced Tea with my friend.

Whilst chatting things over with my friend I could feel my ears popping and we both realised that the Reiki was still working its magic almost 24 hours later!

How do I feel about Reiki? I love it! Not only is it exceptionally relaxing during the session, the fact that the energy force is still working long after is simply amazing. It is a very important self-care tool, and one that is now in my personal toolbox for life.
