New Endings

There’s always room in every story for a new ending.”

A lot of focus is put on new beginnings in life, but we tend to forget to talk about the endings. This could be due to them being too painful to think about, let alone embrace. As Lao Tzu said, “New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings”.

But endings can also be beautiful. I like to think that sunsets are proof of that.

Every book has a beginning, a middle and an end, with a lot of chapters in between! Every single day, we have an opportunity to create a new ending. I experienced this quite literally recently, when I entered a short story competition and received feedback that they loved the concept, but weren’t too keen on the ending, along with their reasons why.

I was also told that my story will be published, along with others that entered, and that if I wanted to revise the story, to send the updated version to them within a couple of weeks.

I had a feeling when I originally entered my story that the ending wasn’t fantastic. But, as it was the first time I’d ever attempted something like this, I was keen to simply put it out there and hope for some constructive feedback.

The feedback was gratefully received and I was so excited to have an opportunity to not only have a short story of mine published, but to be given the chance to change and improve it. I have also now learnt what I need to focus my energy on more, the ending!

In our lives we are likely to go through a lot of new endings, some painful, some joyous. But what we need to remind ourselves, is that these endings all form the chapters of an entire story of our lives. One that we are the author of, and one that we can always change the ending to.
